Until I get a new AV receiver that can hook up both my PS3 and PS4 and also my PC output I needed a quick-fire solution. This is it.
I bought an optical cable that fits into the back of this converter and into the Optical Out port of my PS4. I then used my Red/White audio leads to connect this box to my current sound system and voila - sound! I made sure the PS4 Optical Out options were set to Linear PCM so as not to blow my speakers and I do not have to use headphones connected to the controller any more (late at night, maybe).
It came with a UK plug adapter (yes, it has to be plugged into the mains to work) and worked straight away. no messing, just plugged in and it worked!
